The vision of Bruce Randolph School is to create a collaborative, consistent, healthy learning environment where students in grades 6-12 are challenged and empowered to be lifelong learners and productive citizens in a global community. As an autonomous school within Denver Public Schools, Bruce Randolph has unique goals, projects, and leadership development opportunities to grow young people into effective, productive citizens.

One of the school’s most significant goals is to incorporate field-study and experiential learning components into the curriculum – educating students outside of the classroom through travel, internships and other programs to develop them as global citizens. Many studies – including those conducted by the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed At Risk (CRESPAR), the National Staff Development Center (NSDC), and the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning and the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) – show that expeditionary learning is linked to a remarkable increase in student achievement as measured by test scores, school climate and pedagogy and student involvement and confidence. The Bruce Randolph team is excited about engaging students in expeditionary learning activities that will significantly advance their academic achievement and personal development.

The school has outlined several grade-specific field-study trips. Last year, Bruce Randolph successfully pioneered the first experiential learning trip for all 9th graders to Keystone Science School. This experience emphasized the importance of building a sense of community, responsibility, leadership, and was the first time many of the students had spent time away from their homes.

These students are now in 10th grade, and the school is piloting a field-study trip to Washington D. C. for a select group of these students in May 2008.

Students will visit a variety of historical and cultural sites in Washington D. C.All trip activities are linked to the 10th grade American History curriculum, and students participating in the trip will help the school develop a model for expanding the trip so that this opportunity can be provided for all 10th grade students in future years. These 10th graders will be members of the first graduating class of Bruce Randolph School in 2010, and in creating the model for this trip and related activities, they are leading the way in developing the school’s culture and overall programming.

Bruce Randolph School is located in northeast Denver’s Elyria Swansea neighborhood, serving students from neighborhoods including Cole, Five Points, Globeville, Highland, Northeast Park Hill and Whittier. The school has one of the highest minority student populations in the state; 85% of students are Hispanic and 13% are African-American. Twenty-two percent of all students are English Language Learners. Of 687 total students, 95% participate in the free and reduced lunch program, a key indicator of poverty.

As our students are from low-income families, we are seeking any and all community support for this trip! Any dollar amount is a great help in sending our students on a learning experience unlike any other in Denver Public Schools.

For questions or for more information, please contact Lauren Croucher, Community Liaison at Bruce Randolph School (720-424-1141). All donations are tax-deductible.

Thank you for the support of our students.
