Great-West is currently hiring a Senior Counsel to join our legal team of professionals. The principal objective of this position is to provide tax and legal advice to the corporation with respect to a broad range of matters relating to compliance with federal and state laws governing employer-sponsored employee benefit plans, fiduciaries, individual retirement accounts and insurance company products.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Extensive knowledge of ERISA, DOL regulations, DOL exemptions and the ability to interpret and apply accordingly.
2. Extensive knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code, IRS rulings and regulations applicable to employee benefit plans, individual retirement annuities, cafeteria plans, life insurance and annuities and the ability to interpret and apply accordingly.
3. Knowledge of COBRA, HIPAA and other rules applicable to health and welfare plans.
4. Knowledge with respect to individually customized plan documents, prototype plan documents, adoption agreements, qualification testing issues, federal disclosure and reporting requirements, as well as reviewing and drafting contracts, agreements and communications.
5. Research and interpret state insurance laws regulating insurance company products, policies and contracts, including payments to brokers.
6. Provide assistance with preparation of materials for board and trustee meetings.
7. Knowledge of state banking and OCC/FDIC rules applicable to trust companies and ability to interpret and apply accordingly.
Background and Qualifications:
- JD and admission to a state bar, LLM in taxation preferred.
- Prior relevant employee benefit experience (5-7 years) at a law firm or in house counsel position.
- Outstanding research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure, work well with clients, meet agreed-upon deadlines, and manage multiple tasks concurrently.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively at all levels of the organization.
