The Soviet Union, attempting to fight the same people we are now, was bankrupted and their military ruined by a protracted assymetrical war.They attempted to fight these people assymetrically because they didn't care what the world thought either.Outcome - they left Afghanistan with their tale between their legs and created more terrorists.Muslim extremists that followed them home to Chechnya, etc.
What has our government done.The same exact thing.We have created a situation where these extremists who are bent on killing Americans have the training ground and material to do so.
Those extremists and the people that have lost everything, especially in Iraq, are not afraid of assymetrical warfare.They have been using it forever.From the biblical time of David v. Goliath until now, the people of the Middle East have been at each others throats like angry dogs and they fight with what they have the means to get - rocks, molotov cocktails, AK 47, RPG, IED.
We could muke the whole place, kill them all, what ever phrasing you want to use, but we are not fixing/solving the root problem.The utter poverty, lack of nationality, crazy hate filled education that the Wahabiist provide that have led us to where we are today.Those are the real problems.
Am I afraid of fighting these people, the right people, hell no.And there is not a liberal, progressive, moderate, conservative who is.These extremists that are killing are kids in Iraq and Afghanistan, bombing our embassies, suicide bombing markets need to be made gone.
We, however, cannot assume that we can use the same strategy against these people that has been used forever without success and get any better result.History tells us that.
The world, our friends, other countries in the region, needs to fight these people from both sides.Fixing the underlying reasons why these people hate and for those that continue to fight, kill them.Fixing the underlying causes of hate worked for the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland, my guess is in the long run a similar tactic will work in the Middle East.

Asymmetrical warfare dude. 7 terrorists and $20 worth of everyday chemicals on one hand and thousands of innocent people killed and millions in outright damages. Downstream, a crippling economic blow to the airline industry and even more layers of pre boarding security.
No army, no navy. Massive destruction. And when you get right down to it, wholesale murder kinda just for the sake of wholesale murder. Seriously, what defense do we have against murderers like this? When there aren't even demands made beforehand??
The answer is simple. Wholesale murder of us will bring down 100X that on them. Punishing the wrong people, innocents? No such thing as innocents. Tough shit.
They target our monuments, our business centers and military command centers as symbolic. Fine, kiss that fucking black rock you morons prostrate yourselves in front of. And don't worry, we'll make sure there are 1,000s of worshippers there when the bombs drop.
