Downtown law firm consisting of a sole practitioner and two clerks practicing in the areas of consumer bankruptcy, collection defense and other consumer oriented civil litigation is seeking an legal assistant or paralegal (junior level) who is smart, capable and interested in a career in the law.
The ideal candidate will present professionally, possess good interpersonal skills, be an excellent writer and thinker and work well with a team of colleagues in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
Duties include tracking cases, drafting correspondence and pleadings, learning frequently-used programs (WordPerfect, Amicus Attorney, TimeSlips, EZ Filing, Essential Forms and Adobe Acrobat), becoming familiar with court rules and court personnel (state, federal & bankruptcy courts), interacting with colleagues, opposing counsel, clients, and referral sources, handling large projects, task and workflow management.
The right candidate will possess a strong desire to help those in financial distress and share our goal of providing economic and social justice to an unreserved population.
The position can be very demanding - 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. five or more days per week are common - but we enjoy the work and enjoy the atmosphere of a small firm. No billable requirements are expected. An ability to work independently, intellectual curiosity, deadline sensitivity and problem-solving mindset are extremely important. The applicant must be a self-starter, demonstrate a willingness to exercise initiative, and have a good sense of humor. A willingness to learn paralegal skills is a must.
The firm is growing and has a good group of team-oriented players to work with. Your primary contact will be the attorney, with some contact with the law clerks and co-counsel in other firms.
