Mechanical Engineer, Biomedical Instrumentation
Precision Photonics Corporation (PPC) of Boulder, CO (www.precisionphotonics.com) seeks a
versatile mechanical design engineer to join our Diagnostics Team. PPC is developing low cost
instrumentation for applications in clinical diagnostics and global health. The candidate will join
a small, fast-moving, highly interactive, cross-disciplinary R&D group focused on instrument and
assay deliverables. The right candidate is an active team player, has an open-minded approach
to problem solving, enjoys “hands-on” work, is attentive to details, and is a self-motivated
worker. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone looking to join an early stage
development project. The position offers the right person enormous upside potential.
Job Duties:
The mechanical design engineer will provide design and fabrication direction and support for the
PPC diagnostic instrument hardware, including optical reader instrumentation and disposable
plastic fluidic components. Duties include creating and editing 3-D CAD models and detailed
drawings in accordance with company standards; designing parts according to standardized
manufacturing and assembly techniques appropriate from prototype to high volumes; managing
BOMs and determining part sources; specifying appropriate materials and fabrication methods;
and managing vendors.
Requirements:
• B.S. or M.S. Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 3 years industry experience in an R&D environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency in current solid modeling CAD software and hardware. Solid
Works strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated proficiency in the following standard practices: kinematic design, ECO
processes and protocols, tolerance stack-up analyses, system layout work, and Design
for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) methods.
• Direct experience managing vendors and suppliers.
Desired Skills / Experience:
Strong preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience. Relevant
background should be highlighted in the cover letter.
• Background in biomedical or clinical diagnostics instrumentation, especially systems
involving fluid handling and/or optical components.
• Low volume fluid handling experience, including microfluidic devices and lateral flow
systems.
• Direct experience with all of the following process technologies: laminate conversion,
injection molding, machining, sheet metal forming, and rapid prototyping techniques
(SLA/SLS).
• Design experience in a regulated environment, including ISO certified control systems
and FDA design control requirements.
• Precision opto-mechanical design experience, including athermal design.
• Experience with project management, budgeting, and value engineering.
