POSITION: Help Desk Technician

STARTING SALARY: $36,690 per year
SALARY RANGE: $36,690 - $46,967 per year

One (40 hrs/wk), full-time, benefited, non-exempt position with the Department of Information Technology. Hour will vary, Monday through Friday. The City of Westminster offers a bonus of up to $1,000 per year depending on the employee's level of fluency in Spanish, Hmong and/or Laotian.

NATURE OF WORK
This is a technical position in the Department of Information Technology that is responsible for providing first and second level technical support for networked and standalone personal computers and supported applications running in a Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and Linux. Responsibilities include administration of network user accounts, e-mail accounts, security and permissions, print job management, and network connectivity. This position also installs, configures and troubleshoots personal computer hardware, software and peripherals as well as maintains the Help Desk Management software application. Work is performed independently and under the supervision of the Lead Systems Administrator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Responsible for systems administration for networked user accounts, e-mail accounts, security and permissions, and print job management for users connected to Windows 2003 server environment. Troubleshoots network connectivity problems for LAN/WAN clients in a Microsoft Windows environment. Installs, configures and troubleshoots all supported personal computer hardware and peripherals including personal computers, printers, scanners, tape drives, and software including Windows XP and Vista, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Office 2003 and 2007, Pagemaker, Arts & Letters, and various other off-the shelf packages. Coordinates full-time coverage for the centralized Help Desk. Completes work orders for all support calls using a Help Desk software management system. Monitors all Help Desk requests and completes calls or assigns them to other Systems Administrator Staff. Keeps users informed on the status of all requests for support. Generates weekly and monthly management reports. Coordinates services with hardware and software support vendors. Assists with the purchase of hardware and software for personal computer users. Trains users in operation of both hardware and software.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to do basic systems administration on two or more of the following: Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Vista, Microsoft Server 2003, Linux OS and Microsoft Exchange 2003. Ability to install, configure and troubleshoot Windows X, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Office 2003 and 2007 and various other Windows based software applications. Good working knowledge of hardware and peripherals including printers, tape drives, scanners, optical drives and PDA. Excellent analytical skills, creativity and problem solving skills for resolving technical problems. Ability to establish work priorities as a team member. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively technical concepts and technology solutions to personal computer users and management. Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals to install, configure and troubleshoot personal computer hardware and software, and isolate and correct client network connectivity problems. Ability to follow departmental goals and directives. Ability to respond to user requests and concerns in a prompt manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City management, vendors, system users, supervisors, other employees and the general public. Ability to handle multiple priorities and work with minimal supervision.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
Intel and AMD based personal computers and servers Dell, HP laser printers and print servers, Cisco networking equipment, HP tape drives, networking test equipment, modems, software previously mentioned and various other software packages and reference materials for hardware and software support, small tools for computer hardware upgrades, and various office machines such as telephones and calculators.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Working environment is primarily of an office nature with controlled lighting, heating and air conditioning. Sufficient strength is needed in order to lift and move up to 40 pounds to move computer equipment as necessary. Driving of personal or City vehicles may be required to make frequent trips between City facilities to troubleshoot and transport hardware and software. The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with computer users and vendors is required. Sufficient visual acuity is needed for repair of computer equipment using small tools and components. Work occasionally entails exposure to moderately noisy environments and electrical hazards due to working in confined or closed spaces with computer systems.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
Some college level technical classes or vendor specific technical classes required and one to two years experience in providing technical support for PCs in a LAN environment. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered. Experience with Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server, Linux, Windows Active Directory Services, TCP/IP, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000 Professional, Office 2007, and Office 2003 are highly desirable. Experience in Microsoft Exchange Server, Blackberry Enterprise Server is desired. Professional certification in any of these areas previously mentioned is a plus.

Successful candidates will be required to complete a pre-placement substance screen prior to employment. Background investigations will be done prior to employment.
